Trustees and Volunteers
Trustees
Newland Hurst is a registered charity and as such is required by the Charity Commission to have a Board of Trustees.
In our case, the majority of the Trustees (also known as the Councill of Management) are relatives of NH residents.
Collectively, they are entrusted with the overall responsiblity for managing the business of Newland Hurst and ensuring that the aims and aspirations of the community are being approriately met.
Regular visits are undertaken and formal monthly meetings are held with the Principal to discuss these issues and all other relevant topics.
The Trustees are all unpaid and as such their efforts are undertaken in a voluntary capacity - although , as parents, siblings, or friends, they regard their work as a labour of love.
Two current members of the Council of Management, i.e. the Chairman and the Treasurer, were involved with the original concept back in 1977 and with the subsequent evolvement of Newland Hurst.
Volunteers
A volunteer scheme exists at Newland Hurst lto create additional opportunities for residents which may not have otherwise been available. Not surprisingly, staff appointments sometimes occur from people who initially arrived as volunteers. In brief, the scheme is as follows:
- Befriending an individual resident. In all probability, the volunteer and resident will have similar interests which could be shared in a meaningful and mutually beneficial manner.
- Driving duties, e.g. to college or to a social event.
- Sharing a hobby or particular skill with one or more residents at Newland Hurst.
We welcome applicants to volunteer scheme* and in the first instance a telephone call to Louise Furby (Volunteer Co-ordinator) or Jim Rowland (Principal) will initiate the process.
* Current legislation required rigorous checks of all appointments including volunteers. At the very least, this has to include two written references and an enhanced disclosure (police check) that is undertaken by the Criminal Records Bureau.
